Tomorrow, I shall think back to this moment and remember what it felt like to be able to walk up and down stairs.
In 24 hours I hope to be sitting in an outdoor cafe eating a giant slice of pizza or some other food that does not require much utensil work, though my hands might be the only thing on my body not in pain at that moment.
Yes, back in February we decided this would be fun and paid $100 to endure this kind of torture. Voluntarily.
This is the least prepared I’ve ever been for a marathon, and good vibes are not happening. It’s also a strange feeling to be sitting at home less than a day before the race. Duluth is a four hour drive, so we hope to get to the expo around dinner time.
This is where I do not get into a long rant about Scott still being at the office, nothing being packed, etc.
Scott’s outlook on this whole thing is a little more positive than mine. “We’ll get to see the course,” he said to me the other night. Well, I’m hoping to see at least half of the course, maybe even 3/4 of it.
After doing some reading in this month’s Runner’s World, I read about this and think it’s a spot-on diagnosis of what is going on with my foot. If I don’t die during the race tomorrow, I will try to get into a podiatrist. However, at this point, it’s a go to the podiatrist or make my car payment this month kind of thing, so it might not be happening soon.
But seriously, I am curious to see how it goes. My times, from best to worst, are about 45 minutes apart. My second-to-worst time happened last fall, after running my butt off all summer. This wasn’t much faster than my worst time, where I did next to no running for the two months leading to race time. Can I finish under six hours? It’s a pathetic goal, but it’s mine.
I don’t think we’ll have wifi access while staying at UW Superior (we declined to pay up to $500 per night for a hotel in Duluth) so I’ll post updates via Twitter, if it’s working. Regular posting will resume on Monday if I am still alive.
