She belonged to my grandmother. I picked her up on my recent trip to Detroit. My aunt took the old gal in and got her tuned up. So we’ve been spending the last few weeks getting to know each other.

It wasn’t easy at first, and due to my very limited sewing knowledge, thread was jammed, needles almost broken and much profanity uttered.

Today I hemmed a pair of jeans and fixed the strap on my Twins ball cap (Dog #1 had chewed the strap in half).

It’s amazing what you can learn when you research something instead of diving in without directions. While it might not seem to be a big deal to you, hemming those jeans was a monumental achievement. I can’t tell you how many needles I’ve busted trying to do this in the past. A sturdier needle and the right kind of thread will do wonders. Wonders, I tell you.

I needed to get the jeans done so that I’d have something to wear to Day One of my new job, which starts tomorrow. I’ll be bartending — hopefully temporarily — at [Undisclosed Location].

I can’t stress enough how I hope this is a temporary gig. This is the last place I pictured myself at this point in my life.

But while I’m hoping for something better to come along, hope is hardly paying bills around here. Unfortunately I need real cash money for that.

I will do my best to attempt to be sociable and polite. And maybe if I do well, they’ll teach me how to do the shamrock thing in the Guinness head.
