Please forgive me if I seem a little crazy. It seems I’ve given caffeine the boot.
I didn’t really make the decision. I didn’t say, “Starting today I will be giving up caffeine.” It just sort of happened.
I’d been trying a few lactation-friendly herbal teas in an effort to help with the seeming low production as of late. I hadn’t touched the chai concentrate in the fridge, and I can’t remember the last day I took a walk over to Starbucks. My french press, moka pot and auto drip machine? Unused. Gathering dust for the past two weeks.
I was about three days into the whole drink this tea 3-5 times a day when I noticed I was having severe headaches. Then I realized I hadn’t had any caffeine for a few days. Detox? It’s been so long since I’ve given something up that I don’t even recognize it.
When I was pregnant, I quit caffeine for most of the pregnancy, and it wasn’t difficult. The funny thing is, I hardly consider myself a caffeine addict. Sure, I have a cup of coffee or tea every now and again, but I don’t live and die by the coffee bean. It wasn’t too easy to give up during those nine months.
My real problem lately has been sugary drinks. Lemonade from concentrate. Coke. Anything sweet. When I was in full steam ahead weight loss mode, I wouldn’t touch the stuff. Somewhere along the way, abstinence gave way to moderation, which gave way to a complete and utter lack of discipline. My thighs can back me up on this one.
I’ve done absolutely nothing to bring my body back into shape since the baby. I’ve eaten anything I’ve wanted and waited until afterward to feel guilty, only to do it again. Sophie is going to be a year old this month.
It’s about time I got off my ever expanding ass.
Maybe caffeine-free isn’t my biggest problem, but it’s a start. For the past two weeks I’ve been drinking water, with an occasional sip of juice. We’ve committed to trying out and picking out a jogging stroller on our trip downstate this weekend, because it’s time. It’s MAY. We have a marathon in five months and Mama’s got 20 lbs to lose.
So, yeah. That’s where we are today. By the way, if any of you have a great jogging stroller reco, please leave it in the comments. Needed: something that’s going to last, and I’m guessing that it’s not going to be in the $100 range. Also, preferably something we can use for light off-road running, mostly on old railroad grades converted to snowmobile trails (level gravel paths). This is the one we’re thinking about.

I bought mine at Costco – many years ago though. I would recommend one that isn’t too low to the ground (I’ve seen some real skimmers) and with hearty enough tires if you are going to use it other than on pristine pavement. Mine had a detachable front wheel (great for getting it in and out of the car) and would fold down with a one-handed thingie-switch. I can’t remember the brand but it came with great detachable things like a zippered bottom to keep the feet warm (it can get chilly if you’re not the one exercising and important if you are going to use it into next fall) and roll up windows on the umbrella over hang, also it had another zippered thing that would go over it for the rain. I know I’m not being clear – maybe check Costco online to see if they have anything.
