Week Two Weigh-In
Previous Weight: 141 lbs
Current Weight: 138 lbs
Change: -3 lb

I’m a little giddy this morning. I stepped on the scale twice, because I couldn’t believe it was telling the truth. I’m not surprised as it’s been in the 90s here for a few days, which is very atypical of U.P. weather. We don’t have air conditioning, which means we get home, turn off the lights, keep the house closed and hunker down.

I had a goal to exercise more than I had the previous week. It didn’t happen. I kept up with my daily walks to and from work with a run and Jillian Michaels workout thrown in. We had two social events that worried me. I knew it was going to be hard to control myself, but I did. Resisting the not so good things is getting easier. I feel I’m settling in to this new lifestyle more easily.

The greatest part is that I rarely feel like I’m depriving myself of anything I want. And yes, it takes a lot more planning and work, but I’m making delicious meals. I’m feasting on salads and turkey burgers and well, more salads.

This sure doesn't feel like a diet.

A month ago I told Scott that I needed to cut down on sugar. I knew if we cut sugar out of our diet, the weight would come off. I haven’t cut it out completely, because I know myself. I wouldn’t be able to do it. I don’t WANT to do it. I’m completely fine with a little sugar in moderation on occasion. But I have cut back. It’s in my salad dressing, in the cake we made for Sophie’s first birthday. Which, by the way, was delicious.

So I’m encouraged. I kid about the food poisoning, but coupled with my WW weight loss, I’m down almost ten pounds. I haven’t seen the 130s for years; this is a huge deal for me. I’m sleeping better (aside from the toddler who still doesn’t sleep through the night) and I just FEEL better about myself. When I get discouraged and want to eat everything in sight, even though I know it won’t make me feel any better, I make lists. Lists of things I can’t wait to wear again, like t-shirts that have been boxed up for years and jeans that I might actually be able to wear again while they’re still in style.

Speaking of style, Sophia is winning the award for best dressed baby (or person) in our house, thanks to some very generous friends and relatives.

If it weren’t for my family and friends, this child would be nude. I’m sure one day when she’s a teenager and we’re standing in a store arguing about clothes, she can say, “But you never buy me anything! Even when I was a baby!” I’m so looking forward to that day.

Saturday was Sophia’s first birthday. We had a low-key celebration; Dad had meetings all morning at work and I needed to clean the house before Sophia’s brothers and sister arrived for dinner later that evening. She did help me make the cake, and by help, I mean she sat in her highchair, ate strawberries, and didn’t throw a tantrum for an hour.

Sophia, beaters

Special occasions call for licking the beaters.

We transitioned directly from dinner to cake time, since the child was getting restless. She didn’t know what to think about it at first, but after she got a taste of the icing, she had no problems giving it a try. You know, to make her mother happy.

Must. Eat. More. Cake.

There were a few gifts, and while Sophie doesn’t quite get the whole tearing paper off presents thing yet, she did have fun playing with her new toys, none of which were bought by her parents. And maybe you think we’re bad parents for not dropping wads of cash on her first birthday, but seriously, she has no idea. She may not even get it next Christmas. We’re going to see how long we can milk it. It’s not that we’re not into buying her gifts. She is, however, the first grandchild in my family, which means she has a lot of loving family members who want to buy her things.

We had originally planned to spend her birthday with a few of our friends – have a cookout, drink some beer, etc. Instead, we decided to spend it with Scott’s kids – her brothers and sister – and it was SO the right thing to do. And even though she’s only a year old, I think Sophie had fun, too.

Wow! Hello 130′s!!

I can’t wait until my baby is born in October. Right now, I’m too sick to really care about what I’m putting in my body … but come Fall — I’m getting back in the saddle.

I love Sophia’s birthday pictures!
